U.S. Army ABC-M17 Field Protective Gas Mask

The U.S. Army ABC-M17 Field Protective Gas Mask used internal cheek filters, making it lighter and less cumbersome than previous gas masks.  This design saw many years of use, and was copied by several other countries.  Production began in 1959.  In 1966 a drinking straw was added, resulting in the M17A1.  The top example was made by Daytona Tire & Rubber in 1963, shown with Optical Insert and M1 steel pot helmet in middle pictures.  The bottom example is shown with Cold Weather Kit installed, and was made by Mine Safety Appliances in 1964.
